We Love Primroses
One of the most colourful and prettiest spring flowers.
These hardy blooms are one of the earliest flowers to bring joy to the garden and boost your mood during late winter and once your primroses start to bloom, you know that spring isn’t far away! Primroses are hardy, early-flowering perennials that come in a wide range of bright colors and thrive in cool conditions. They are commonly used in seasonal bedding, containers, and window boxes, adding cheerful splashes of color alongside early bulbs like crocuses, daffodils, and snowdrops..
What do they look like
Clusters of large, rounded blooms in rich, jewel-toned hues, often featuring contrasting centers or delicately edged petals, rest gracefully above mounds of soft foliage. Some varieties also showcase elegant double flowers.
What do they like to grow
They thrive in a variety of soils as long as conditions are not excessively wet or dry, and they can be grown in either sun or light shade. For container planting, use peat-free multi-purpose compost mixed with grit or perlite for improved drainage.
What do they not like
They struggle in highly alkaline (lime-rich) soil or soil that dries out quickly. Enhancing the soil with organic matter can help improve conditions. They also require some light, as they won’t flower in deep shade.
Did you know?
While some plants may survive beyond their first year, their blooms tend to be smaller and fewer, making them best replaced annually. The fairy primrose (Primula malacoides) produces fragrant flower sprays on tall stems and is commonly sold as a houseplant. Like others, it is best discarded after flowering.
