Margaret Shurlock, Trainee Assistant Manager at Strikes Garden Centre, Darlington Road, Northallerton was named the national winner of the HTA Shop Care Award Candidate of the Year 2008.
The HTA Shop Care Award focuses on delivering outstanding customer service within the garden centre industry. Candidates taking part in the learning scheme have to pass a written test and an on-site assessment of their knowledge. The HTA Training Awards are essential tools for helping garden centres achieve trained, knowledgeable and confident staff.
The awards presentation took place at the recent Glee Tradeshow at the NEC in Birmingham.
Assessors commented that Margaret was ‘a superb candidate whose knowledge is far wider than is recognised by the assessment. Furthermore, because she really understands the underlying subjects she can convey the right information to the customer in an understanding way’.
Commenting on her award Margaret said, ‘I am delighted if not a bit surprised at being selected as candidate of the year. I plan to spend my prize money on a laptop so that I can keep up to date on information to help with unusual customer enquiries plus available chemicals and new plant varieties.’
